Auto repair near Beacon Hill
Ten minutes from Beacon Hill by Montreal Road, the 174 and Exit 112. Suspension, brakes, rustproofing, A/C and safeties on Star Top Road.

Montreal Road to the 174
From Beacon Hill, take Montreal Road to the 174 west. Where the 174 meets the Queensway, keep right for Highway 417 East (Cornwall, Montréal) and get off at Exit 112 (Innes Road). Turn right on Innes and right on Star Top Road. It is 8.3 km and about 10 minutes outside rush hour.
The shop is Unit 1, 1541 Star Top Road, Ottawa, ON. Watch for that 417 East ramp: miss it and the 174 carries you toward downtown instead, and you are looking for a place to turn around.
What the 174 does to a suspension
The 174 carries Orléans and the east end into the city every morning, and by March the pavement shows it. Freeze thaw opens cracks, the plows catch them, and the potholes that follow are deep enough to bend a rim. Montreal Road has its own patches and manhole covers that sit proud of the asphalt.
Every hit goes through the struts, the links and the bushings. The signs are a clunk over bumps, a car that keeps bouncing after a dip, a nose that dives under braking, or tires wearing on the inside edge. Shocks, struts and suspension work is quoted per car once the parts are checked. After struts or steering parts are replaced, the car needs an alignment, which we don’t do in house.
Brakes in the morning crawl
Westbound in the morning, the 174 can go from highway speed to stopped and back several times before the split. That is hard braking from speed, over and over, and it heats the rotors more than city driving does. Warped or unevenly worn rotors show up as a shake in the steering wheel when you brake from highway speed.
Brake repair starts by measuring the pads and rotors and checking that the calipers slide freely. Parts prices depend on the car and on whether you choose standard or performance parts, and the quote comes before the work.

Rust on cars that sit outside
Many Beacon Hill homes have driveways rather than garages, so the car sits out in the slush between trips. Salt water stays in the rocker panels, the seams and the brake lines for days. Rustproofing puts a no drip undercoating on before the salt goes down, $140 for a car and $180 for an SUV. Fall is the best time, while the underside is still dry. The coating gets sprayed into the seams, rocker panels and around the brake and fuel lines, which are the places a car parked outside rusts first. A coat once a year keeps it from wearing thin on the parts that take the most spray.
Selling, buying and summer
If the car you are selling has a few of those salted winters on it, the Ontario safety inspection is $240. The certificate is issued electronically through DriveON. Rusted brake lines, worn tires and loose suspension parts are the usual reasons a car fails, and you get a list of what needs fixing.
In July the same morning crawl becomes a hot one. If the vents blow warm in traffic and only cool down at speed, the system is usually low from a leak or the condenser fan is not running. A/C repair finds the leak with gauges and dye before anything is recharged.

Questions people ask
How do I get from Beacon Hill to SA Auto Repair?
Take Montreal Road to the 174 west, then the ramp for Highway 417 East toward Cornwall and Montréal. Get off at Exit 112 for Innes Road, turn right on Innes and right on Star Top Road. It is about 8.3 km and 10 minutes.
Does SA Auto Repair do wheel alignments?
No. There is no alignment machine at the shop. After suspension or steering work you will need an alignment done elsewhere, and we tell you when it is needed.
What does a clunk over bumps mean?
Most often a worn sway bar link, a tired strut mount or a ball joint with play in it. Potholes speed all of these up. The car goes up and each part is checked by hand before anything is quoted.
Is there a garage near Beacon Hill that speaks French?
