How brake pricing works here

Brakes have no posted price, because two cars with the same complaint can need very different parts. The parts price depends on the make, model and year, and on the quality you choose, from standard to performance. A front pad job on a small sedan and a full set of pads, rotors and calipers on a pickup are not the same bill.

What you can expect is that the brakes are checked first, the parts that are worn are named, and you get the price for your car before anything is replaced. If something can wait until the next visit, you are told that too.

Standard or performance parts

For most cars that commute on Innes Road and the 417, standard parts are the right call. They match what the car came with, they are quiet, and they wear at a reasonable rate. Performance parts are made to handle more heat. That matters on trucks and SUVs that tow a trailer, carry heavy loads, or spend a lot of time braking hard. If you are not sure, tell us how you use the vehicle and we will tell you which one makes sense.

Signs your brakes need looking at

Brake problems usually show up as a sound or a feel before they show up as a failure.

  • A thin squeal while driving that stops when you brake. That is often the wear tab on the pad touching the rotor.
  • Grinding or scraping when you brake, which usually means the pad lining is gone.
  • A pulse in the pedal or a shimmy in the steering wheel when you slow down from highway speed, often from uneven rotors.
  • The car pulling to one side when you brake, or one wheel much dustier or hotter than the others, both signs of a sticking caliper.
  • A soft pedal, a pedal that sinks at a red light, or a brake warning light on the dash.

A pedal that sinks toward the floor or a red brake warning light means the car should not be driven until it is checked. We do not tow, so arrange a tow to 1541 Star Top Road and call (613) 744-1521 to let us know it is coming.

What salt and slush do to brakes

A winter of driving on salted roads is hard on brakes in ways that have nothing to do with how much you use them. Rotors are bare iron. They rust on the face, on the cooling vanes between the faces, and on the inner hat that bolts to the hub. A light grind for the first few stops on a wet morning is just surface rust coming off. Rust that pits the face, or eats into the vanes until the rotor is thin, is not.

Rear brakes on many cars get the worst of it. They do less of the stopping, so the rust is never scrubbed off, and it is common in Ottawa for rear rotors to be scrapped long before the pads are worn. Caliper slide pins seize when their rubber boots split, and pads stick in brackets packed with rust. The result is one pad worn to the metal while its partner looks fine. A proper brake job cleans and lubricates that hardware, not only the pads.

Many newer cars have an electronic parking brake built into the rear calipers. Those have to be put into service mode with a scan tool before the pistons can be pushed back.

Brake lines and hoses

Most cars still have steel brake lines running the length of the underbody. Salt eats them from the outside, usually worst where they sit in clips or above the fuel tank. A rusted line gives very little warning before it leaks, and a leak means the pedal drops. If a line is scaling badly when your car is in, we will show you. The rubber hoses at each wheel get the same look, since they crack and swell with age.

Brake fluid also ages. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes the inside of calipers and the ABS unit. Many manufacturers call for a change every two to three years whatever the mileage, and your owner’s manual has the interval.

Brakes and the rest of the car

Some brake complaints are not brakes. A pull when braking can come from worn suspension parts letting a wheel shift, and nose dive under hard stops is often tired struts, which the shocks and suspension page covers. When the wheels come off for the seasonal tire change, that is a good time to look at pad thickness and rotor condition without a separate visit.

Brakes are also one of the main areas on the Ontario safety inspection, so a car being sold or transferred often needs pads, rotors or lines before it can pass.

Booking a brake check in Ottawa, ON

Book online any hour and pick brake services. Describe what you hear or feel, and when. Cold mornings only, every stop, or only braking hard from highway speed all point to different things. Add up to four photos if there is a warning light or something you can see through the wheel. You can drop the car off until 2pm.

We are at Unit 1, 1541 Star Top Road, just north of Innes Road beside the 417 at Exit 112. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6pm and Saturday 9:30am to 2pm, with service in English and French.

Questions people ask

How much does brake repair cost in Ottawa?

There is no single price, because parts cost depends on the make, model and year of the car and on the quality you choose, from standard to performance. At SA Auto Repair on Star Top Road the brakes are checked first and you get a price for your car before anything is replaced.

Why do my brakes grind in the morning after it rains?

Bare iron rotors grow a thin layer of surface rust overnight in wet or salty weather, and the first few stops scrape it off. If the noise is gone after a few stops it is normal. If it stays, or it grinds every time you brake, the pads may be worn through.

Why are my rear brakes worn before my front brakes?

Rear brakes do less work, so rust gets a head start on them. Seized slide pins and pads stuck in rusty brackets wear them unevenly, and many newer cars also use the rear brakes for stability control. On Ottawa cars it is common for rear rotors to rust out before the pads wear down.

Is it safe to drive with the brake warning light on?

A red brake light can mean low brake fluid or a hydraulic problem. If the pedal also feels soft or sinks, do not drive the car. An amber ABS light means the normal brakes still work but the antilock system is off, so book a check soon and leave more room to stop.

What is the difference between standard and performance brake parts?

Standard pads and rotors match what most daily drivers came with and suit commuting. Performance parts handle more heat and are worth it on vehicles that tow, carry heavy loads or brake hard often. The price difference is quoted for your car so you can choose.
